The day I went to Amazon to buy a book I saw the 4HWW showing up under recommended books. The title was so intriguing that I immediately clicked on it and bought it without further consideration.

It's more than likely that I would not have clicked on (& bought) that other title.

Great Post! Iknow I'm a bit late, but just ran into your website this week after reading the IHTSBH post.

I just read a book by Dale Carnegie that makes this exact point and goes even further into it. The things he talk about are more about life in general but will work wonders for a marketer. The book is called "How To Win Friends And Influence People". Highly recommended.

"Tim is a smart guy, and he decided not to cling to his favorite title choice; he went with the market winner. But he very easily could have thought, “Hey, I’ve been giving lectures at Princeton for a long time with that title - I know for a fact that it will work.” No, it won’t. People simply couldn’t see the benefits they’d derive from a book about drug dealing."

As far as I know, Tim wanted to keep the title as "Drug Dealing for Fun and Profit", but the publishing agency didn't have it.

"it doesn’t matter what you think, it doesn’t matter what I think. It matters what the market thinks."

Except the market doesn't always know what it wants... especially when you're at the cutting edge. You're right--no one cares about your baby, but pioneering work is sometimes working against market favor until it suddenly tips into popularity.

I'd be interested in reading a followup post on this idea...
