Great and interesting post. Personally, I would insist in the importance of being able to sit for a while, think about past year and write down some of the things one may have learned.

The mere act of writing that down is a powerful tool. I think most people would be surprised about the outcome of such a practise.

Hi Charlie,
Great way to review what you have learned. I appreciate that you have
“effectively received a 1-year crash course in entrepreneurship, something my schooling didn’t really offer.” There is no substitute for taking risks and making things happen. Many MBA programs for example focus on case studies for large and medium sized companies, but do not address the needs of start-ups. At the end of the day real experience trumps case studies and textbooks.

Hey Nate. I just started up an LLC for legal purposes. Nothing too exciting.

I’m liking this sporadic writing schedule, as well. It hasn’t affected engagement, traffic, nada. I don’t know why people and companies feel compelled to write everyday. It’s a lot more relaxed this way.

Thanks for the comment, Jay. You’re definitely right about retainers: they do limit your ability to explore new opportunities.

Hadn’t heard of doing the rate card before. Question: Have you used salary.com? I think what you’re describing with rate card can probably be accomplished through that site, as well. Although I could be wrong.

I probably would outsource some of it, and actually Jared (in the comment above) has been telling me to do just that for quite awhile now. I’m still very new to outsourcing — I literally just started doing it for data entry. I’ve seen some awful video editing done by people who went to film school, so it’s hard for me to yield control.

Charlie, what company did you start? I don’t remember hearing anything about this before. Is it legal protection for your freelance work or are you building a new product or service? Congrats on all your success in 2009.

I’m still digging your posts, good content. I like how sporadic they are, because I don’t have the time to read people who post daily.
